Remember that time of the year-every year, when a new year comes around and you decide to make a resolution? Well, I don’t mean to brag but I’m still going strong with my resolution. My resolution was to create a stormtrooper that coincides with a holiday of the day whether it be official or unofficial. There is definitely a lot of content to work with and there have been some moments where I laugh to myself because of all the fun that I have been having with this project. However, this project keeps me busy as ever. I am not drawing as frequently as I want and it definitely takes a ton of dedication to doing this every single day. All in all- fun but busy.
While doing this project, I have had various thoughts about a uniform and the role that it plays within society and how it affects a person indiviually. The interesting thing is that a uniform can be anything. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a military or civil servant uniform (though that is the first type of uniform that comes to mind.) The driving factor behind a uniform is that it unites a group and associates them with an identity of sorts. A uniform presents a person as a united front and gives authority to its wearer.
Ironically, A uniform also takes away individual identities in favor of a group identity. This project has been a chance to discover what lies underneath the uniform- a chance to reveal the indivituality of a person when they are hidden by the uniform that they wear. The stormtroopers have always been one of my favorite parts about the Star Wars mythos and I find it intriguing that they are all clones of Jango Fett. It made me wonder whether or not these clone troopers had individial personalities much like identical twins are two different people.
Because of this, it is the reason I chose such a title for this project. Uniformity means to be in a state of being uniform-united by a uniform. Uni means one, right? The root word aptly describes the idea that I am trying to convey. At the same time, a cop, a soldier, a firefighter, a student, a grocery store clerk, a waiter or anyone else who has a uniform is an individual. Essentially it is a different state of oneness. Interesting how both uniformity and individuality have the cohesion at its heart-oneness as a solitary person versus oneness as a whole. That is why within the title, the “i” is bracketed within the word denoting identity within individuality and identity within the word as a whole.
In taking time to consider the person underneath the uniform, this is what I have come up with so far for the year. I’m excited to see the final parts of this project as a whole. It’s interesting because this idea of uniformity and indivitualty are strong aspects of each other much like macaroni and cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They are amazing individually, but when macaroni is paired with the cheese or peanut butter has its jelly, delicious things happen. This project is the same way. Individually these stormtroopers are fun to look at and carry a whimsical tone. Seeing all of the stormtroopers together as whole has its own overwhelming strength too. I for one can’t wait to see when this project is finished.
